The Upper Dolpo Trekking adventure is a dive in to an amazing world of diverse climate and civilization located in the remote Nepal. The Dolpo region is located between the Tibetan border and Dhaulagiri Himalayan region. The Upper Dolpo region has the mixed culture traditional settlements of Tibetans, Buddhists and traditional nepali people. The Dolpo is one of the remote, untouched, unspoiled and untamed region of wild nature and traditional ancient Himalaya civilization of lost Tibetan Buddhism society. The Dolpo region is the region of more elevation, more remote and more harsh climate in compare to other places of Dolpo region. The Upper Dolpo is one of the globe’s most wanted regions for voyagers and adventure travelers who want to endeavor the difficulties of nature and land on most mysterious places on the earth. There is a book called “Snow Leopard” by Peter Matthiessen which is written on extinct white leopard of Himalayas which are still found in Upper Dolpo. There is an English movie nominated for Oscar is filmed on Upper Dolpa called as “The Caravan” which get the best location award in Oscar.

The Upper Dolpo is the semi-desert region dominated by Tibetan culture and tradition which are reflected in the traditional villages of Upper Dolpo. There are some magnificent regions in Upper Dolpo which are considered as heaven on earth and among this one is Shey Phoksundo Lake which is an untouched region from modern day civilization. The travelers will encounter some high Himalayan pass during their trip which are dominated by beautiful views and sceneries. The Upper Dolpo trekking adventure starts from taking airplane flight from Kathmandu Airport to Nepalgunj Airport. The walking adventure to upper dolpo starts from Jhupal Village from where the travelers move towards Shey Phoksundo Lake traversing through wild nature, rough hilly roads, backwoods, traditional villages and high Pass until they reach the Shey Phoksundo Lake. The travelers rest at Phoksundo Lake area and further move towards Shey Gompa at saldang village which is an ancient Bon Po village of 2km area still living in their centuries old customs and traditions. The Sheygompa lies on the traditional exchange course to Tibet from Nepal which further leads to ancient Trans Himalayan Trade Route of Nepal and Tibet. The travelers then finally return to Jhupal Village in the end of the trip. The travelers return back to nepalgunj airport from Jhupal Village to each Kathmandu.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Kathmandu & Transfer to the hotel.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, our team will warmly welcome you and ensure your smooth transfer to the hotel. Take this opportunity to relax and unwind after your journey, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Nepal’s capital city. You’ll have time to settle in and prepare for the adventure ahead, with plenty of opportunities to explore the local markets and cultural landmarks.
Day 2: Permit preparation and trek briefing
Today is dedicated to finalizing permits and receiving a detailed briefing about the upcoming trek. Our team will assist you in obtaining the necessary permits for your journey and provide essential information about the route, safety guidelines, and equipment requirements. Take this time to ask any questions and make last-minute preparations before departing for the remote regions of Dolpo.
Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj
After breakfast, you’ll board a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a bustling city in the western Terai region of Nepal. Upon arrival, you’ll have some free time to explore the vibrant markets and cultural attractions of Nepalgunj, immersing yourself in the diverse culture and cuisine of the region.
Day 4: Fly Nepalgunj to Juphal (2500m). Trek to Dunai (2140m)
Begin your adventure with a scenic flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal, a small airstrip in the Dolpa region. From Juphal, you’ll embark on your first trekking leg to Dunai, the administrative headquarters of Dolpa district. The trail winds through picturesque villages and lush forests, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Day 5: Trek to Ankhe (2660m)
Continue your journey deeper into the heart of Dolpo as you trek from Dunai to Ankhe. The trail follows the meandering path of the Bheri River, passing through terraced fields and quaint villages along the way. Enjoy the serene beauty of the landscape as you ascend to higher elevations, with opportunities to interact with local communities and learn about their way of life.
Day 6: Trek to Sulighat (3500m).
Today’s trek takes you to Sulighat, a picturesque village nestled amidst the rugged mountains of Dolpo. Arrive in Sulighat and settle into your accommodations for the night, enjoying the tranquility of the mountain wilderness.
Day 7: Trek to Phoksundo Lake (3600m).
Embark on a breathtaking journey to Phoksundo Lake, one of the deepest freshwater lakes in Nepal. The trail offers stunning views of the turquoise waters of the lake and the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Day 8: Restday at Phoksundo Lake (3600m).
Take a well-deserved rest day at Phoksundo Lake to acclimatize to the altitude and soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings. Spend the day exploring the area around the lake, hiking to nearby viewpoints, or simply relaxing by the water’s edge. Take in the majestic views of the surrounding mountains and enjoy the peace and serenity of this remote Himalayan oasis.
Day 9: Trek to Phoksundo Khola (3500m).
Resume your trek with a scenic journey to Phoksundo Khola, following the meandering trail along the banks of the river. The trail winds through lush forests and alpine meadows, with occasional glimpses of wildlife along the way. Arrive at Phoksundo Khola and settle into your accommodations for the night, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Dolpo region.
Day 10: Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang (4402m).
Continue your ascent towards Phoksundo Bhanjyang, a high mountain pass offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The trail climbs steadily through rocky terrain and alpine vegetation, with breathtaking vistas unfolding at every turn. Arrive at Phoksundo Bhanjyang and take in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayas before settling in for the night.
Day 11: Trek to Shey Gumpa (4126m) via Kang La pass (5151m)
Today’s trek is challenging yet rewarding as you ascend to the high mountain pass of Kang La. Traverse rocky terrain and snow-covered slopes, with stunning views of the surrounding peaks stretching as far as the eye can see. Descend to Shey Gumpa, a sacred monastery nestled amidst the rugged mountains of Dolpo, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 12: Rest day at Shey Gumpa (4126m)
Take advantage of a rest day at Shey Gumpa to explore the monastery and surrounding area. Participate in traditional Buddhist rituals and ceremonies, or simply soak in the spiritual ambiance of this sacred site. Alternatively, embark on short hikes to nearby viewpoints for panoramic views of the Himalayas before returning to Shey Gumpa for the night.
Day 13: Trek to Namduna Gaun (4400m) via Saldang La (4785m)
Resume your trek with a challenging ascent to Saldang La, a high mountain pass offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. The trail climbs steadily through rocky terrain and snow-covered slopes, with occasional sightings of Himalayan wildlife along the way. Descend to Namduna Gaun, a traditional Tibetan village nestled amidst the mountains, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 14: Trek to Saldang (3903m)

Day 15: Trek to Yangze Gompa (3855)

Day 19: Trek to Dho Tarap (4090m)
Resume your journey towards Dho Tarap, one of the highest settlements in the Dolpo region. The trail winds through rugged terrain and picturesque valleys, with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Arrive in Dho Tarap and explore the ancient monasteries and traditional stone houses that dot the landscape, immersing yourself in the rich culture and history of the region.
Day 20: Rest day in Dho Tarap (4090m)
Take a well-deserved rest day in Dho Tarap to acclimatize to the altitude and explore the surrounding area. Day 21: Trek to Tarap Khola (3800m)

Day 22: Trek to Khani Gaon (2550m)

Day 23: Trek to Tarakot (2281m)

Day 24: Trek to Dunai (2140m)
Resume your trek with a scenic journey back to Dunai, the starting point of your adventure in Dolpo. The trail follows the meandering path of the Bheri River, passing through quaint villages and lush forests along the way. Arrive in Dunai and celebrate the completion of your trek amidst the warm hospitality of the local community.
Day 25: Trek to Juphal
Embark on the final leg of your trek back to Juphal, where you’ll bid farewell to the remote wilderness of Dolpo. The trail winds through picturesque valleys and terraced fields, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Arrive in Juphal and settle into your accommodations for the night, reflecting on the incredible journey you’ve undertaken.
Day 26: Fly Juphal to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.
Board an early morning flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj, where you’ll catch a connecting flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and spend the remainder of the day relaxing and reflecting on your epic adventure in Dolpo. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow trekkers, sharing stories and memories of your time in the mountains.
Day 27: Depart Kathmandu.
After breakfast, our team will transfer you to the airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your unforgettable journey through the remote regions of Dolpo. Take with you cherished memories of the rugged landscapes, ancient cultures, and warm hospitality of Nepal. Until we meet again, farewell and safe travels!
